The Silvertown Tunnel project involves the creation of a twin-bore tunnel, approximately 1.4 km in length, designed to accommodate large vehicles, including double-decker buses. One of the key features of the tunnel is a dedicated lane for buses, coaches, and goods vehicles, which will help to reduce congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel and support the expansion of cross-river bus services operated by Transport for London (TfL). The tunnel aims to improve traffic flow, reduce emissions, and offer an alternative route for commuters, reducing the pressure on existing transport routes.

NG Bailey’s role

With our strong expertise in tunnels, rail, and infrastructure, we were awarded the £17 million contract by Riverlink CJV to support the delivery of the Silvertown Tunnel project. Our role involves overseeing the design, installation, testing, and commissioning of key systems within the tunnel. This includes:

  • 11kV and LV distribution systems: Ensuring reliable power distribution for the tunnel’s operation
  • Tunnel lighting with integrated control systems: To provide efficient, safe, and automated lighting solutions within the tunnel
  • Evacuation panels and signage: For safety and emergency response
  • Cable management system: To organise and protect the tunnel’s extensive cabling infrastructure
  • Motorised control centre panels: For the centralised operation and management of the tunnel’s systems.

Project impact and benefits

The Silvertown Tunnel project promises to have a transformative impact on East London’s transport network. By providing an additional crossing over the Thames, the tunnel will significantly ease congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel and reduce travel times during peak hours. The dedicated lanes for buses and goods vehicles will also support the expansion of cross-river public transport services, contributing to TfL’s efforts to offer a more sustainable and accessible travel experience for Londoners.

Furthermore, the tunnel is expected to improve air quality by reducing congestion and enabling more efficient traffic flow. With fewer vehicles idling in traffic, harmful emissions will be significantly reduced, contributing to cleaner air across East London.

Social value and community engagement

We have been committed to supporting local communities and delivering positive social impact as part of the Silvertown Tunnel project. As part of our social value initiatives, we have engaged with local schools to deliver educational sessions and raise awareness of the project’s benefits. We have also made a significant effort to employ apprentices and graduates from within the business, providing valuable skills development and career opportunities to young people.

The Silvertown Tunnel is a landmark infrastructure project that will improve transport links, alleviate congestion, and contribute to a cleaner, more efficient London. With our expertise in the sector, we are proud to play a key role in delivering this essential project on time and within budget. Through our work, we are helping to shape the future of East London’s transport infrastructure while contributing to the local community and supporting sustainable growth.
